Originally from Eritrea and based in London since age 11, Filmawi Efrem is a filmmaker and photographer whose work blends poetry, magical realism, and intimacy. His passion for imagery began with disposable cameras gifted by his mother. Today, his portfolio features collaborations with brands like Adidas and Dr. Martens, while maintaining a deeply human approach.
Filmawi uses his lens to challenge stereotypes, especially around the representation of Black men. His work, whether in photography or film, explores humanity with profound sensitivity, often infused with poetic realism. “I show who we truly are, not how the world perceives us,” he says, highlighting his dedication to authentic storytelling.
On set or brainstorming in cafés, Filmawi prioritizes human connection and emotional depth. Recently, he captured 100 portraits for Gaffer magazine, celebrating innovation and cultural diversity. His unique perspective cements his place as a vital voice in contemporary art.
